This past summer, I was one of twenty individuals from Temple University selected to be a volunteer for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, Frances this summer. This experience counted as three credit hours as was considered as an immersion course.
Before the trip, I did a lot of preparation which included doing SafeSport training courses, essays, etc. When I arrived, I stayed at a hotel near the Gare De Lyon train station. During the trip it was an awesome experience commuting from the train station to different venues.
As a volunteer for Team USA, I got a chance to work at the welcome experience. I was asked to assist the athletes get the necessary gear once they arrived to the welcome facility. I was also tasked with organizing storage items so that the distribution of materials was easier for the employees. I also got a chance to work at the Performance Center where the athletes trained. I had to refill snack and drink stations as well as check-in the athletes via a barcode once they arrived. As an added bonus, I got a chance to eat with some of the the top professional athletes at the venue. This was such a surreal experience!
For my final experience, I was tasked to monitor different tourist exhibits and the Champs on Lock Exhibit during the opening ceremony. I got a chance to interact with guest where I informed them about the exhibits.
When I wasn't volunteering, I also got the chance to visit the city as a tourist. During my free time, I went to the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Palace Versailles. It was awesome seeing some of the most monumental buildings up close. I also had an opportunity to play pickup basketball with some of the teenagers from the local area.
Honestly, this trip was much fun as I got a chance to represent my country, school and community. Thank you Dr. Blair for the opportunity!
